I Have Bed Bugs, Am I Going To Die?

April 16, 20252 min read

Hey there! I received a call yesterday afternoon from a very concerned customer who was struggling with a bedbug problem. She had an intense fear that bed bugs were extremely dangerous and that she was personally going to die and that her tiny baby was going to die.

I want to reassure you first that having bedbugs is not life-threatening! Though their bites can be pesky and itchy, they don’t spread any serious diseases, so there’s no reason to panic.

The initial indication you may have with bedbugs is their bites. Because they’re nocturnal, they usually hide away during the day, so they can be difficult to see. If you suspect you have bedbugs, here are some common hiding places to look for:

  • Cracks and crevices

  • Furniture

  • Behind skirting boards

  • Among books

  • Behind wallpaper

  • Inside bedding

  • Under the mattress (including buttons and seams)

  • In and around bed joints

  • On sheets and walls

Another question that often comes up is, “How did I get bedbugs?”

Well, bedbugs are known to hitch a ride on just about anything humans carry, like:

  • Luggage

  • Clothes

  • Laptops

  • Handbags

It’s also important to remember that although messy spaces can facilitate infestations, bedbugs can find their way into the cleanest homes. They’re just really adept at finding cozy hiding spots!

Bedbugs can move between neighbouring properties via space between walls, which can cause additional invasions.

When bedbugs bite, they inject a bit of saliva containing anticoagulants, which numb the site. That means you may not even realize you’ve been bitten until you wake up and see the marks! Some people don’t react at all; some get itchy or even infected when they scratch. In India, a study has even triggered anaemia due to prolonged bedbug bites!

So while bedbugs may be the vampires of the insect world, don’t worry  you won’t become one! But their bites can produce sleepless nights and some anxiety. If you are seeing bites, it is time to call in the experts. The sooner you take care of the problem, the easier and cheaper it will be for you to restore your residence to normal.
