How to – Bedbug inspections

May 01, 20252 min read

With the approach of the festive season, families all over are busy planning their yearly vacation trips and packing their bags for some fun!

They dream of exotic overseas travel, jumping on planes to visit different places and make incredible memories.

After weeks of travelling, sightseeing, and trying tasty local flavours, travellers arrive home refreshed and ready to tell family and friends about their incredible experiences.

But wait! What if I also told you that memories aren’t the only thing you could bring back with you?

Watch out for bed bugs they might hitch a ride back home

So, what exactly are bedbugs? These little critters love to make a meal of blood. As nymphs, their at the beginning of their life cycle, they are virtually clear and about 1 mm long. The adults jump from 5 to 10 mm in size and have a brown colour.

They’re known for eating people, but if humans are not close by, they will munch on other warm-blooded critters. Which is why they’re often called the vampires of the insect world!

You can identify their presence by searching for:

  • Moults (the skins they shed)

  • Dark droppings that resemble little ink spots

Why should you be concerned about bed bugs?

Believe it or not: bed bugs were almost eradicated last century but made a shocking comeback, particularly in hotels, with reports of a 400% increase in recent years!

The nimbleness of their small size means they can sneak into your clothes, luggage, shoes, etc. without you even noticing. In a matter of months, a single breeding pair can yield thousands of little invaders! So your best defense against these annoying pests is making sure you’re not in a room that includes them.

You might be wondering, “How do I avoid that?”

It’s super simple! Just consult our handy guide about how to look for those sneaky little critters.

Here’s a simple memory tool of what to look for with the acronym BUGS:

  • B:Bathroom

  • U: Under the sheets and seams

  • G:Ground

  • S:Surrounding furniture

Bathroom: Once you get to your room, put your luggage in the bathroom (or even the bathtub, if you can). Bed Bugs cannot scale shiny, smooth surfaces such as glass!

Under the Sheets & in the Seams: You’re not just hunting for the bugs themselves you’ll also need to look for their moult and droppings. Take a peek at the mattress by pulling back the sheets. If it looks good above, make a finger run along the seams below.

Ground: Ground: Look around the bed, quickly. Bedbugs typically do not stray far from their sources of food. Try finding them in those fun corners with a flashlight or light from your phone.

Surrounding Furniture: Lastly, give a once-over to the nearby furniture, especially upholstered pieces. Pay close attention to seams and any little hidey-holes.

By keeping these tips in mind, you can enjoy your travels worry-free! Safe travels and happy holidays!
