February 16, 20252 min read

Nothing like the surprise of waking up to mysterious bites after a good night’s sleep, right? Yikes! Even the thought of it makes your skin crawl.

As we indulge in those warm summer evenings we tend to ignore those annoying little red bites left by mosquitos, fleas, and gnats. But how do you know when it could be something more serious?

Could those bites be from those sneaky little bedbugs who feast on us while we're asleep? Then, we’re going to get into a few tips for identifying a potential infestation before it goes too far.

How to Spot a Bedbug Bite

Bedbug bites can look slightly different for each individual, but they typically present as itchy, red bumps that tend to be arranged in neat rows or groups of three. So if these bites are from bedbugs or just some harmless little critters, here are some friendly tips to help you figure it out:

1. Before bed, take a quick peek at your skin and note where any bites show up.2. In the morning, The next morning, make sure to check again. If you’re still seeing new bites, that could suggest bedbugs are enjoying a midnight snack!

How to Check for Bedbugs

Now, let’s take a look around your sleeping area:

Signs to Spot:

  •  Tiny, dark droppings

  •  Red blood stains on your sheets

  •  Little white eggs (about 1/16″ long)

  •  The bugs themselves, which are small, brown, and about 1/4″ long

Step-by-Step Search

1. Gently pull your bed and nightstand away from the wall and see if any little critters scatter away. You may even see some stains on the wall!

2. Peel away the top layers of bedding to the fitted sheet. Use a torch or flashlight up close to look for any signs.

3. Be mindful of the seams of your mattress, where bed bugs like to hide. Use a credit card to help keep the seam open while you shine your light in there (and be sure to check the other side of the mattress too!).

4. Examine the joints of your bed frame, allowing the flashlight to illuminate all the small nooks where a bed bug could potentially hide. Take a little photo, and collect any evidence you come across.

(Now don’t forget to look around your other furniture!) Drag things away from the walls and examine zippers and seams closely.

Whether you find a bedbug infestation or simply have a few unexplained bites, it’s always best to contact a professional. Keep in mind, it is always best to seek a second opinion!
